Thanks so much for this post. I'm making royal icing cookies for the first time in a few days. I took down some notes!
Another good video tutorial Bridget. Was happy to see that you have to pop air bubbles too sometimes. Thought it was just me! Love the chaulkboard message on the wall in the background LOL. Keep doing these tutorials. I know that youou and your *professors* are helping countless baking bloggers.
i love these vlog post. They are so helpful :)
Thank you so much for the vlog posts. My 15 yo daughter and I were not flooding the cookies correctly. Now we know just how to do it. Our plans for summer, to work on our cookie skills!
This is a great tutorial!!! I watched it with my nose practically pressed against my screen so I wouldn't miss a thing.
I wish I was kidding.
Question for you... When the cookie is filled, how long do you let it dry before you start decorating on top of it? Will the icing even out to make a flat surface?
I love it when you do videos because you're just so stinkin' adorable.
I forgot to add - I loved your apron!
Yes they do- thanks so much!!! Bookmarking this page!
I love the vlogging. I am a brand new cookie decorator. I am baking some cookies for a friends bake sale to rais emoney for Autism this weekend. I bought a puzzle piece cookie cutter and am going to try to outline and flood the cookies like you showed. Since these are for a bake sale I was hoping that the icing would look super yummy and shiny. Should I use more corn syrup to make them shinnier? Is shinnier even a word?
Do they help? You better believe it! Thank you so much for what you are doing. I have been decorating cookies for a few years now and can never learn enough. Even if it is something I already do, it's good to see how someone else does the same thing and learn new tricks and ideas. Keep up the great work!
Kate...Yes, that icing will smooth out. You can even jiggle the cookie back and forth to make it smooth out faster, but don't worry...it will.
I wait about an hour before adding any other piping on top of that wet flood icing.
Amy...you know, I'm not sure about adding more corn syrup. I'm afraid it might make the cookies sticky and then they would be hard to stack and/or package. If you try it, let me know. :)
Great tutorial! I have been teaching myself how to decorate royal icing cookies...and after watching your video I now know that I haven't been squeezing enough of the flood icing on my cookies as I'm always having to spread it out a lot more than you did and have been using a spatula rather than a toothpick. Thanks for the great tips...I bet next time I decorate cookies this will be a lot easier!
Yum! DEcorating cookies seems like a TON of fun!! Esp. since I LOVE love baking cookies...
OH I LOVE SEEING YOU DO THIS~YOU LOOK GREAT AND I LOVE SEEING ALL THE WORK THAT GOES INTO YOUR BEAUTIFUL COOKIES ;)
I'm lovin' these vlogs....I'm a visual person and so new with cookie decorating....

I love all of your vlogs (I can type that word, but don't ask me to say it outloud... I can never get it out right!)... You do a great job with them. Now I want to make some cookies tomorrow. :)
Bridget Love the videos! They are very helpful. It is nice to see the decorationg in action. I made your royal icing recipe around easter following the Bake@350 recipe and now after watching all of your vlogs realize some mistakes I was making! Thanks for taking the time to share and help other cookie lovers out there ;)
Bridget that was fantastic!!
I never thought to raise my cookies up! I like to stand too, but then my back is killing me from bending over the cookies!! raising them up is a great idea.....as longs as I'm not a klutz and know them over LOL
These videos are SOOO helpful!! I now see that I'm not using nearly enough flood icing...that may be part of my problem!
You are too cute!♥

YES YES YES!!! I love your vlogs!
Thanks so much. You do a great job describing techniques in your Bake at 350 blog, but the videos really help. And remember, for some of us, there is nothing too basic to explain!
This is awesome! Thank you so much for posting these vlogs. Extremely helpful! I follow Bake at 350 religiously and am attempting my first "real" try at decorating cookies. (Normally cupcakes are my thing) My first couple attempts at cookie decorating were a disaster.
Thank you again and thank you for helping me "not fear the cookie."
Thank you so much for these vlogs! I love baking and I love to decorate cookies, cupcakes and more. My cookies never looked as professional as I would like them to, however. I can't wait to try a new batch with these tips you've shared! Keep them coming :)
The vlogs are so handy. I am just starting out with cookie decorating so I love the beginner basic guides.
Thanks,
Lucy

thanks so much for the great tutorial! i will definitely use these suggestions.
thanks for the vlog!
You have inspired me to start to take on cookie making.
I have just made my 1st patch today, but the icing is kinda "wrinkly"... rather smooth/shiny like yours?
any tips? did I over mix the icing? too much water when I made my flood icing? not letting the flood icing sit enough for the air to raise??
here is a pictures:

F3....hi! I just clicked on your pics. Yep, it looks like your flood icing was a little too watery. It's happened to me, too. Next time, just add less water. :)
Thanks Bridget!
I will def. roll up my sleeves and give it a try again!
xoxo
This post is so helpful. I am just getting started so I really need the step by step. Thanks for being willing to show the very basics!
This is great! I have always wanted to do this and now am so happy to see that I can! Can't wait to try it. Thanks so much Bridget!
Yes! These videos helps SO much! Thank you to all the professors at the University of Cookie for giving such great tips! I am falling in love with cookie-making and it's so nice to have some visual guidance! :D Most of the road-blocks I run into as a newbie are things that are just easier to learn by watching...like consistency of icing and how to create certain shapes and designs. This site ROCKS!
The tutorial on flooding is amazing for a beginner like me. Now I'm off to practice!
