Stop Sugar Cravings With These Low Carb Cookies

If you are one of the many people who finds cookies, candy and chocolate quite irresistible, then the thought of losing weight with a low-carb diet may fill you with horror.  However, there are a number of low carb recipes which will help to satisfy your sweet tooth without wrecking your diet.

Healthy cookies are now one of the top baking trends and they can be found in most supermarkets.  However there’s nothing quite so nice as a home-made treat. So this recipe (adapted from ditchthecarbs) is a terrific, easy to make, low carb cookie (2.7g of net carbs per cookie) which tastes really chocolaty and will help to satisfy those sweet cravings which many of us suffer from when we’re on any kind of diet plan.

Some notes about ingredients: One of the keys to low carb desserts is finding an acceptable sugar replacement.  One which won’t spike your blood sugar and ruin all your good work.  For baking my favorite is Xylitol:

Xylitol is actually a type of carbohydrate, but it’s one which doesn’t have the adverse effects of regular sugars. When we eat it, it’s only partially metabolized by the body and with it’s low glycemic index of 7, it doesn’t cause a blood sugar spike which can lead to fat storage.  via

It’s one of the most widely available and most neutral tasting sugar substitutes, and as a side benefit Xylitol is also good for your teeth!

This cookie is gluten free. The recipe calls for ground almonds instead of wheat flour.  This gives much more texture to the cookie, but also adds a lot of flavor – which is always important when you’re reducing sweetness in a recipe. You can use almond flour if you prefer, but it is more expensive.

The other ingredient which makes these cookies extra special is the cocoa.  Buy the highest %cocoa you can find to give the cookies a real chocolatey hit.
